The Significant Ankle Ligament Injury (SALI) Cohort Study

Background

Ankle sprains are among the most common of all injuries within sport, and also within the general population, accounting for up to 5% of all Emergency Department visits in the UK every year. They are often thought of, and treated as, minor injuries, and yet as many as half of people who suffer a severe ankle injury do not fully recover and end up with some lasting ankle problems that can limit the persons lifestyle, including an increased likelihood of recurrent ankle injuries.  Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder, and is a common cause of disability in adults in the Western World. Joint injury has been linked to the development of OA and while a lot of research has focused on injury and OA in the knee and hip, very little work has looked at the ankle, where around 80% of ankle OA is due to injury. It is suggested that osteoarthritis at different joint sites should be treated as separate conditions, and while little is known about the nature, causes and progression of injury related ankle OA, the lack of knowledge in this area will have consequences for the prevention and treatment of ankle osteoarthritis

What the research hopes to achieve

The purpose of this study is to provide new knowledge about:

1) The type of people who suffer a significant ankle ligament injury

2) What it is about those people and their injury that may mean they go on to develop OA

3) What things influence this chance i.e. who is more likely and who is less likely to go on to develop OA after a significant ankle ligament injury

Work Package  Epidemiology (WP1)
Biomarkers (WP2)
Mechanisms for Movement Dysfunction and Interventions (WP3)
Principal Investigators Dr Laura Wyatt, Prof Brigitte Scammell and Prof Mark Batt (University of Nottingham)
