Shuen Lee Yee (Intern 2015)

What are you studying/ what did you study at University?
I studied Sports and Exercise Science (BSc Hons) in Loughborough University. 

Why did you apply for the internship?
The internship provided a great opportunity to network and to work on a variety of projects.    

What was the Project you were involved with when attending the internship scheme?
I was involved in a project in developing skeletal muscle models of atrophy in vitro and investigating its relevance to osteoarthritis at Loughborough University. 

What stood out to you the most as an intern?
I was really impressed with the opportunities and exposure given as an intern, where we visited different centres and learnt about the work done by various centres.

What skills did the internship equip you with?
The internship equipped me with technical research skills such as cell culture, immunohistochemistry and western blots. The internship also equipped me with important soft skills, including interpersonal, presentation and critical thinking skills. 

Why would you recommend the internship?
I would definitely recommend the internship to individuals interested in exploring a career in research. 

What are your achievements since the internship scheme?
After the internship, I went on to complete my PhD in exercise and ageing physiology under a scholarship offered by Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.   

If working, what’s your occupation and where?
I am currently a research fellow at Singapore Institute of Technology. 

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 
I hope to be able to do more research work in ageing, especially in community-dwelling older adults.
