Centre researchers take to the podium at the 3rd BASEM/FSEM Annual Conference

The 3rd BASEM/FSEM Annual Conference: From Plinth to Pitch was held at The Hilton Liverpool City Centre Hotel on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th October 2016.  

BASEM Research Bursary Awards 2015

Prof Mark Batt [Centre Director and Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine, Nottingham] was awarded a BASEM Research Bursary for the Centre’s research into Significant Ankle Ligament Injuries (SALI study). Prof Batt, alongside Dr Laura Wyatt [Centre Research Fellow and SALI study Prinicpal Investigator, Nottingham] presented an overview of the Centre and a summary of the SALI study to date. 

Dr Kate Jackson [Centre Clinical Researcher and Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician, Oxford] was also awarded a BASEM Research Bursary. Dr Jackson is involved in a three-year research project assessing the short- and long-term effects of being a professional jockey. This research is funded by the Racing Foundation and BASEM. Dr Jackson presented her work at the conference.

Other Centre Representation

Dr Julia Newton [Centre Co-Applicant, Vice Chair of FSEM Education Committee, Consultant in Rheumatology and Sport and Exercise Medicine, Oxford] chaired the Thursday afternoon session ‘Osteoarthritis, FAI and respiratory dysfunction: Putting the latest research into clinical practice’.

During this session, Prof Siôn Glyn-Jones [Centre Co-Applicant and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Oxford] presented his work, in collaboration with Southampton FC, entitled ‘FAI: Current understanding and advances in management’.

Dr Stefan Kluzek [Centre PhD (completed), Clinical Lecturer, Sport and Exercise Registrar, Oxford] presented ‘Latest evidence on OA research and what it means for clinical practice’ during Dr Newton’s session. 

Dr Jonny Moses [Centre Intern 2015] co-chaired the BASEM Members Block session entitled ‘Know Your Sport’ with Dr Markus Laupheimer.

The British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) is a multi-disciplinary member’s organisation for Doctors and other Healthcare Professionals involved in sport and exercise medicine. It aims to provide support and education to those caring for athletes and individuals undertaking, or aspiring to undertake, regular physical activity at all levels.

The Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FSEM) is the governing body for Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) in the UK, representing and developing the medical specialty of SEM. The FSEM:

• Oversees the curriculum, educational and training requirements, examination, assessment and appraisal of SEM doctors
